Dialectic (Middle School)

Our Dialectic program is for ages 13-15 (middle school ages).

Catholic Schoolhouse engages the whole person. We do this by:

  1. Growing in virtue in the company of the Saints.
  2. Study the true, good, and beautiful.
  3. Prepare the students to enter adulthood with the courage and confidence to change the world.

Our Dialectic students meet for 3.5 hours each week. Their focus is on Communications, Seminar, and a rotation of other courses.

Our Schedule

Communications: 75 minutes

  1. Latin: 15 minutes
    • In Latin the children will be learning Latin prayers, famous prayers, structure, and roots.
  2. Composition: 45 minutes
    • In composition the children will use IEW history-based writing lessons.
  3. Speech: 15 minutes
    • In speech the children will present presentations and memorized selections from History.

Seminar: 60 minutes

  1. Literature: 45 minutes 3x per quarter
    • In Literature, the children will take part in quarterly book discussion including poetry with additional titles for at home reading.
  2. History Timeline: 15 minutes
    • In History timeline the children will have a timeline notebook for utilizing summarization, speaking and analysis skills
  3. Catholic Culture and Virtue: 45 minutes 3x per quarter
    • For Catholic culture and virtues, the children will have interactions and historical connections with culture, virtue, and the arts.
  4. Geography: 15 minutes
    • In Geography the children will learn multiple selections and geography will be mastered through memory and drawing.

Rotation Courses: 60 minutes bi- weekly

  1. Fine Arts
    • In Fine Arts, the children will have hands-on projects and seminars focusing on art, music, and culture.
  2. Science Lab
    • In Science, the children will have hands on science labs.

Credit Integration between Chapter and Home

Credits are not typically assigned at the middle school level, however we offer the equivalent here as a reference or assistance for parents of 9th graders who are building a high school transcript

CSH Dialectic Meets the needs of :

Literature: For 9th/10th grade students, they will need an additional 4 more reading assignments

Writing: For 9th/10th grade students, they will needs emphasis on thesis and completion of research paper and formal literary analysis.

Speech: All 3 tours accumulated = 1 elective credit

Geography: All 3 tours with the optional activities in the homework guide equal 1 elective credit.

Art: All 3 tours accumulated equal 1 elective credit.

CSH Dialectic Partially meets the needs of:

History: Your student will need at least a textbook or other course to fulfill requirements. This will equal 1 credit per tour.

Science: Your student will need at least a textbook or other course to fulfill requirements. This will equal 1 credit per tour.

Necessary add-ons that CSH doesn’t meet the needs of:

  1. Religion
  2. Math
  3. Grammar
